Monday Recap...

Thoughts:

1. Well tonight should be the last night of an underwhelming MLB playoff season. At least we won't have to hear the Saving Private Ryan-type music every time Fox goes to a commercial.

2. And, a bigger bonus, at least we won't have to hear Tim McCarver for another 12 months. Who is worse: McCarver or Billy Packer?

3. PYB will keep the Baylor game recap short and to the point, because a game that bad doesn't deserve any more. How can Shawn Watson not do one thing to highlight any of Cody Green's skills? NU runs the zone read 15+ times when Zac Lee starts, but only three times with Green? Not one rollout, no tight end security blanket, no screen passes....terrible pass plays...one eventually leading to an INT for a TD.

Watson was sure to tell us all that Green misread the coverage....probably true, but a pathetic play regardless. Why should a QB (much less in his first start) throw a pass 25 yards sideways and not one yard forward? The defense is bound to catch on. Every other school runs this play with precision and efficiency, but NU looks like a junior high team doing so. There is no reason the receiver should be outside of the numbers on the field when catching this. The four-wide sets with all receivers running 8-yard hitch routes are a joke.

Even worse, after jumping out to a 20-0 lead (finally!), Watson did not even attempt to do anything for the last 2.5 quarters. Tentative, trying not to blow it....the first sign of a loser every time.

Jared Crick had a monster game, getting national honors. The punt return team actually got a block and a TD--but somehow NU dropped to 105th out of 120 nationally in net punting. The RB situation is a mess, as Bo Pelini refuses to sit Roy Helu Jr. down until he's 100% healthy. The line looked really bad--probably worse than ever against a bad team. The offense is now 68th in the nation. Total defense is 9th....scoring defense is 4th....would be 2nd if not for Green's INT.

PYB can't figure out how bad this team is, or if 6 wins and a bowl game is probably. OU is somehow only favored by six points.....if the Cornhuskers can stay that close, PYB will be amazed. Either way, it will be a good measuring stick for Cody Green and the defense. Check in Sunday for more, because right now, we're clueless.
