PHX-LA

Good recap in Bill Simmons' latest mailbag. Tough loss made easier by the fact that Phoenix never led the game at the end and would have likely gotten screwed in overtime had Ron Ron not made the putback.

Bonus from above link: a link by Simmons to the Hart Foundation vs. British Bulldogs match from the WWF heyday...feature announcers Vince McMahon and the future Governor of Minnesota.

Basebrawl.....SoCon Style

Look for the friend of PYB and Elon assistant coach Nick Brannon..WAAAAAAY in the back with the maroon warmup and sunglasses on his hat....holding back one of the Phoenix players....we expected more out of you Nick....

NU Practice Facility....Top 30 Commentary

Some interesting drawings of the planned basketball practice facility in Lincoln. Will this help NU make noise on the national scene, before TO forgets about the program and shoves it aside like he did with baseball?

And if you want to make your blood boil, click here. PYB has shied away from editorial comments on these ratings, because of their subjectivity, but couldn't resist posting the following. Feel free to let us know if we missed anything:

"The most overrated player in NU history. Me first attitude, along with Solich's playbook, ruined the Husker offense to this day. Beat up on cream puffs----yes. Move the ball against good teams--no (see Miami 2002. Lost the QB job to pre-injury Newcombe, who was a better overall QB, and quit. Solich chased him to Omaha after Crouch went crying like a little baby and ruined the team-before-self mantra for 10 seasons. Also quit the NFL and EuroLeague countless times.

And "true option QB" is a complete misnomer. Had no idea how to pitch or how to space or time the play itself. Little Eric run left with his ball, Baby Eric run right with his ball. Lack of training from predecessor at Millard North was probably the reason here.

If you need a swingset, though, give him a call. Just make sure he doesn't quit the business before you pick it up."

NBA Irony...

--Stern can rig an entire playoff series but GMs can't make a joking comment? The commissioner's hard-line stance is laughable, especially considering the light that Tim Donaghy has shed on the NBA's influencing of games.

--Holy shit.

Poor White Boy...

Notes

Cool video here.

Well Mike Anderson has his boys off to a bad start, if he's going to succeed in losing every Big 12 series this season...Funny how he's talking Mariot to the pros after one win...apparently his 4.87 ERA (5.34 in B12 action) doesn't matter as long as he throws 95 mph. This because an MLB hitter could never hit a 95-mph fastball. But, perhaps with some real coaching, Mariot would get even better. Whatever.

Misc....

--Nebraskans, take comfort in knowing that your top sports columnist can't recognize John Fucking Paxson....

--Amare Stoudemire's penchant for saying all the right things but not doing shit got him through the first two rounds of the NBA playoffs, then he decided to run his mouth. After putting up one rebound compared to Lamar Odom's 19, he called it a 'lucky game.' Odom proceeded to get 11 rebounds in Game 2, Stoudemire 6. It would take him a week's worth of games to get the 30 boards Odom collected in two.

Stoudemire was again worked like a cheap suit by Pau Gasol, who scores at will against the oft-defensively clueless STAT. As bad as he is defending one-on-one, he is MUCH WORSE as a team defender, missing rotation after rotation in critical sequences. After last game, Stoudemire discounted Gasol's domination, saying it was "sheer domination" when I played him in 2005 when he was with Memphis. Whatever.

The Suns should have traded him three years ago when they had the chance at Kevin Garnett. Despite Stoudemire's fake good-teammate act this spring, they should have traded him before the deadline. And now, he will be a free agent this summer. Let him walk. All talk, no substance. Too stupid to play defense. Can't score in the half-court in big situations against good defensive teams. Go away. And everyone can stop patting Steve Kerr on the back just about now.

Pics of the Day...

Boom Goes the Dynamite...

The latest & greatest...

Too many crank shots lately...

Tuesday Notes...

1. Thoughts from last night's Los Angeles vs. Phoenix game:

--Amare Stoudemire has no basketball IQ. Terrible D and worked like a $2 whore by Pau Gasol, as always.

--NBA officiating is worse than ever. And that's saying a lot.

--Kobe Bryant got huge protection. Not "I can break Mike Bibby's face and have him get called for a foul" protection, but enough to make sure LA never broke a sweat.

--Bryant's 40-point game was his 11th in his playoff career. MJ had 30.

--Derek Fisher is the dirtiest player in the NBA.

--PYB's prediction that PHX's heavy reliance on role players will be its undoing may come true.

--LA Laker fans are a sham. And the nightly star search is gay. If you need any proof of this, just refer to the embarrassingly bandwagonish picture above....even by LA's plastic standards.

--Bryant is a fake, a nerd and a social misfit--in a Tiger Woods kind of way.

--Lakers in five...and another unwatchable NBA Finals.

2. PYB loves the Ledbetter quote. So I'm guessing he meant playing at Rosenblatt was special until his stupid fucking coach pulled him out for a left-handed batter with no power who was hitting 100 points lower than he (if you haven't guessed....Mike Anderson, CWS, vs. Arizona St.)?

Pic of the Day...

Tightness...Retro jersey from the Brandon Wheat Kings. Who PYB found is the host team for the Memorial Cup, which is a four-team tournament between the winners of the three top junior hockey leagues and the host. FYI. And we know most of you don't care since the NHL is barely televised these days.

Special thanks to RunLike for his research on this matter.

Wow Sheesh Wow----Embarrassing!!

Not sure what's more embarrassing: this song itself or the fact the whole city of Cleveland is kissing this much ass to someone who hasn't won a thing?

By the way, PYB saw the Memorial Cup game Friday versus the Brandon Wheat Kings and Windsor Spitfires. Brandon had the tighest jerseys ever, which we've still been unable to locate on google.com. Anyway, here's one of their versions, which is OK but not as good as the present one. Stay tuned....

Strike Three and Out of the Big 12 Tournament--Again...

Mike Anderson's boys completed their meltdown on Sunday, getting swept right out of the Big 12 tournament with another pathetic loss. And NU must win its last four games to avoid becoming the first back-to-back losing team since 1975-76. Who'd have thought Anderson could have ruined the program this quickly? He must have been taking copious notes during the Frank Solich regime.

PYB knows winning a series is tough, especially for a shitty coach. But feel free to win one of three games to keep up appearances. What's more mystifying is that his AD supported him for another year and now media types are jumping on board with that lunacy as well. Does Anderson have pictures of TO passed out at the wheel after a night of margarita drinking with Solich?

Strike Two...

Another tank job by Anderson's crew...Is that 13 or 15 straight B12 series lost? Who knows. As long as he'll return next year....Great job TO. As one can see in the picture, the seats at Haymarket Park are damn near empty....2011 will only look worse. Why not get it over with and cancel every sport except football?

Strike One in Columbia....

Despite supposedly knowing what was at stake this weekend, Mike Anderson's team laid another egg Friday. They didn't even score a run. Pretty indicative of his run as coach....when the stakes are high...go scoreless. Pretty indicative of the coach's tenure, as things have gone from bad to worse.

Fuck you Mike Anderson. Apparently, anything outside the Ohio Valley conference is out of his league. Wake up, Tom Osborne. Saddling NU fans with this pathetic excuse for a coach before the 2010 disaster was even complete was unnecessary, shortsighted and offensive. PYB especially loves the "Win-Loss record isn't the only barometer" excuse. How about qualifying for a conference tournament in a watered-down Big 12?

PYB had the misfortune of witnessing two of last weekend's wins over Southeast Missouri State. Despite sweeping the series, Anderson's lack of coaching prowess was on full display. In game three, Anderson forced DJ Belfonte to bunt in the second inning, with NU up one run. This after Belfonte had homered into a stiff wind in his previous at bat and with Adam Bailey on deck. Bailey had 16 HRs on the season, and SEMO would have surely walked him had Belfonte sacrificed the runners to second and third. NU had scored 19 runs the day prior, and there was nothing at stake. Why not let your team get some reps swinging the bat...they obviously hadn't been trained how to sacrifice.

Very similar to the blatant gaffes Anderson made in blowing the CWS game against Arizona State several years ago. Dusty Baker would be proud.

The Queen

Too bad they couldn't pick up the stench of the rendering plants as you drive past on I-29...Suck City...And this bitch said she spent 30 hours putting this trash together? Anyone with a brain could do it in five.

Now, out of order, but requiring comment nonetheless....PYB is not sure what is most disturbing about Cleveland's meltdown last night in Boston:

1. The fact that the Cadavers quit
2. The amount of shit Lebron James took, when it was the media who overrated and deified him to outrageous proportions, when in reality he has never won anything. ESPN, The Devil, is the main offender here.
3. Everyone's overzealousness to find out where James will sign, even before the series was over
4. The fact that James will be just another loser in the mold of Karl Malone and Charles Barkley if he changes teams. True winners with a killer instinct never leave: Jordan, Bryant, Bird, Magic, Olajuwon.
5. The fact that it looked like David Stern had a hand in this tank job, so that James would go to a top three TV market in NY or Chicago.

Sure, James looked lost. But he could have well been injured well beyond what was being reported. He's never been anything but a pro, unlike many other NBA stars and frauds like Tiger Woods. The media created this monster, giving him play of the night for another one-handed jam that would embarrass even James Worthy. If he truly is great, and not just a regular-season wonder, James will get his ring. Will he drop the bullshit act of becoming an "icon" and billionaire and try to get the title he supposedly wants so badly? With guys like Jordan, it was an obsession. With James, it may just be an afterthought in his grand plan.

Now, for a TMZ-esque twist that could explain it all. And if it's true, Cleveland you're fucked and rightly so. You can thank the depression-ridden, wannabe 'banger Delonte West, studio gangsta extraordinaire....Click...

Bad Nicknames Continued...

Big Unit
Big Hurt
Big Dick McGee
Big Aristotle
Big Cactus
Tiger

And a Bad Lie by TO...."Didn't run revenue figures because the Board of Regents wouldn't let us do it". Right. Just admit you're a pussy and would rather campaign against beer and porn than to fix the broken baseball program...God forbid he sell 5,000 more tickets per game right off the bat.

And a bad rating here. All mouth, no results.

5/11

PYB apologizes for the unannounced hiatus, but work and travel got in the way the last few days.

1. We've been asked our opinion several times on the possibility of NU to the Big 10. We don't care. Money and greed has ruined 90% of college athletics and this will be the final straw. It is inevitable. Just let us know when it happens. A few years ago would have been nice, as Bill Callahan could have racked up a few conference titles. Also, please let the NU facilities crew know early as well, so they can get a head start growing the crabgrass that is a requirement in the conference. Six inches tall in October, dead by mid-November.

1a. On a related note, let's hope the tightasses in Lincoln don't screw this up. So far, only 14,000 votes are counted and the arena is barely passing. Anyone who votes against it should just go live in a cave for the rest of their days....In case you think we're wrong, click here.

2. Joe Johnson. Pussy Joe got what he wanted when Phoenix wouldn't give him a max contract, and he got traded to Atlanta. He wanted to go be the 'man' somewhere else. After a couple decent playoff runs, Johnson & the Hawks flamed out against Orlando as fans booed them off the court. Now, rumors say he is gone, looking for the next best thing. Keep searching for a title on a team where you can rack up the dollars with little responsibility in bad times. It will never happen. Winners stay and make winning teams....losers head for the hills.

3. PYB wants reader input on a new topic...shitty nicknames...so please send them in. We'll get it started:

Kevin Garnett: The Big Ticket (completely gay & meaningless)
Paul Pierce: The Truth (what the fuck does this mean?)
Amare Stoudemire: STAT (self-named = self-righteous)
Kobe Bryant: Black Mamba (this one cropped up 8 years after he debuted. stupid.)
Lebron James: King James (not stupid itself, but he hasn't conquered a damn thing.)
Glen Davis: Big Baby (no explanation needed)
Any combo of first initial and first half of last name (J-Rich, A-Rod, blah blah)
Ben Roethlisberger: Big Ben (we prefer raping douche)

Stay tuned for updates....

TO Has Lost His Mind

Well, delirium has clearly set in. If Tom Osborne thinks Mike Anderson is a good coach he clearly has not watched the team closely the last five seasons, or he doesn't know shit about baseball, or both. On Monday, Osborne announced that Anderson would return for 2011. Hello failure, goodbye program. (If you really want to be sick, read the quotes on the OWH link.)

This team has slipped every single season since Anderson took over, rarely batting over .270 in Big 12 play--a truly pathetic mark. The team's old cornerstone, pitching, is awful. The team's ERA is 5.29, 5.57 in league play. No grit, no balls, no determination.

Those who saw Anderson fumble his way along in the CWS know that he has no idea what to do if (BIG IF) he ever gets back to the big stage. The loss against Arizona State, where Anderson was pulling all of the Huskers' best hitters in favor of lefties who were batting .220 for the season, showed that. Pulling out right-handed hitters who have power and are hitting .100 points higher than the subs....so embarrassing. Then, when the game went to extra innings, NU was screwed. Thanks Mike.

Nebraska fans should show up in force the remainder of 2010 and scream for Anderson to be gone. Boo him, make him feel the pressure. Obviously, his AD is not holding him to the same standard--or any standard at all. There are a lot of fans who have spent thousands of dollars on tickets and donations and countless hours driving to and from the games. And this is the thanks that they get? Not to mention money spent in the Haymarket area--the same area where taxpayers are set to vote on the Haymarket arena project. If NU is not serious about winning, what incentive do residents have to vote YES?

Osborne has lost the edge, or likely never had it. His hand was forced by the millions of dollars involved with the football firing. Looks as if Osborne only cares about restoring the order: where football is king, and nobody cares about basketball or baseball. If it happens, it happens....otherwise he's too busy campaigning against porn and alcohol to do his job.

Maybe they can throw up a chain-link fence somewhere and bring in some faded astroturf for an infield, and re-create Buck Beltzer field. Nebraska doesn't deserve Haymarket Park. Osborne and Anderson don't act like they want the responsibility of having it. And the players and fans react accordingly. Sad times indeed.

Brooks Breaks in with Bucs...

1. Not only does he have the sweetest ride in NU football history, Chris Brooks signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's only a matter of time before he is an All-Pro. Hell, if Barrett Ruud can make it, anything's possible.

2. If we have to see the "We Wear No Pants" ad once more during the NBA playoffs, something bad could happen. Instant rage. Fucking terrible.http://www.blogger.com/post-edit.g?blogID=8688961159977308256&postID=192125010671714362

3. Fear the Deer...

4. Some good stuff from minor-league hockey. Bailey would be proud...

5. PYB told you the Cavs weren't that good. Still, this is an overreaction. And Lebron James is hurt.

6. Swing the axe. All the achievements listed here were with Van Horn's players and the team was underachieving that whole time....just like Rat Solich after Tom Osborne left.

5/2 Report...

1. Do they mean optimistic, or oblivious? Hell, we would be optimistic too if we had a job for which we were unqualified, overpaid and apparently un-fireable...

2. 58. Salty.

Trunk Slammin' in Charlotte...

1. Are we there yet?

2. Tiger Woods = MC. 43 on the back--a number one can expect from Greg Norman on Sunday in a major. Not Tiger Woods. The aura is gone. Afterward, Golf Channel swayed from the tone of "the president just died" to "verge of tears" and back again, several times...

3. A can't-miss, in-depth article from Lions camp...Only thing missing is what Suh ate for lunch.
